Pakistan has carried out targeted military operations across its border with Afghanistan, striking what it describes as militant strongholds. The action follows a sharp increase in deadly attacks on Pakistani soil in recent days.
According to a statement from Pakistani officials, the operations were precise and intelligence-driven, aimed at camps belonging to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and affiliated groups operating from Afghan territory. The statement asserted that an affiliate of the Islamic State group was also targeted in the border region.
The move comes in direct response to a series of violent incidents. Just days prior, a suicide bomber driving an explosives-laden vehicle attacked a security post in the northwestern Bajaur district, killing eleven soldiers and a child. Hours before the airstrikes, another suicide bomber targeted a security convoy in the Bannu district, resulting in further military casualties.
Pakistani authorities have issued stern warnings, stating they will not show restraint and will pursue those responsible for attacks “irrespective of their location.” Officials presented what they called “conclusive evidence” linking recent major attacks, including a suicide bombing at a Shiite mosque in the capital earlier this month that killed 31, to militant leadership based in Afghanistan.
The government emphasized that it has repeatedly called on Afghanistan’s ruling authorities to prevent militant groups from using its territory to launch cross-border attacks, alleging that no substantive action has been taken. Pakistan has also urged the international community to pressure Kabul to honor its commitments not to allow its soil to be used against other nations.
This incident marks a significant escalation in ongoing tensions between the two neighbors. Relations have been strained for months, following previous border clashes and reciprocal accusations. While a Qatar-mediated ceasefire has largely held, diplomatic efforts have failed to produce a lasting formal agreement, leaving the border region volatile.
Pakistan has witnessed a concerning resurgence of militant violence, with much of the blame placed on the TTP and separatist groups. The TTP, while a separate entity, maintains close ties with Afghanistan’s Taliban government. Islamabad insists the group orchestrates attacks from Afghan sanctuaries, a claim both the TTP and Kabul deny.
