UGANDAN OPPOSITION FIGURE IN HIDING AMID RISING TENSIONS WITH MILITARY LEADERSHIP

by James Smith

The location of Uganda’s leading opposition voice remains undisclosed nearly three weeks after a contested national vote, as a public confrontation with the country’s top military commander intensifies.

The figure, a former musician turned politician, vanished from public view on January 16th following what he described as a joint police and military operation targeting his residence. In a communication posted online the next day, he stated he had evaded capture and was focused on his safety, alleging state forces were actively searching for him.

Official results from the election, which the opposition has rejected, declared the long-serving incumbent president the winner. While in hiding, the opposition leader has engaged in a pointed exchange with the president’s son, who serves as the nation’s military chief.

The election period was marked by a severe clampdown on dissent. The opposition politician, who galvanized significant support particularly among urban youth, has alleged widespread electoral fraud and called for demonstrations. His party reports hundreds of supporters have since been detained.

In late January, the politician’s wife reported that armed men entered their home, assaulted her, and demanded information on her husband’s location.

From an undisclosed location, the opposition figure has continued to communicate via social media, rejecting the election outcome and mocking security forces. In one post, he dared the military to find him, claiming he is “concealed by the people.” He has advised the government to cede power peacefully.

These statements have drawn sharp reactions from the military commander, known for his inflammatory online presence. In now-deleted posts, the commander declared the opposition figure was wanted “dead or alive” and issued graphic threats against his life. He also accused U.S. embassy officials in Kampala of aiding the politician’s disappearance, claiming the military had suspended cooperation with the mission—an allegation he later retracted, citing faulty intelligence.

The commander denied that soldiers assaulted the politician’s wife during the search, but subsequently posted an image appearing to show armed personnel standing over her in her home.

Military officials have publicly dismissed any active pursuit of the opposition leader, with a spokesperson stating the army is uninterested in what they termed a “drama” and has more pressing matters. Government ministers have also stated he is not wanted by the state.

Analysts caution that the military chief’s threats should not be taken lightly, noting a history of violence against the opposition. The politician’s legal representative has issued urgent appeals to the United Nations and foreign governments, warning that his client faces a credible and immediate risk of severe harm or death if apprehended, based on past treatment by security forces.

The standoff underscores the deepening political crisis in the East African nation, where the opposition claims an electoral mandate is being denied and the state appears increasingly willing to use its security apparatus to silence critics.
