FRENCH POLITICAL FIGURE FACES COURT OVER ALLEGED DRINK SPIKING

by James Smith

A prominent former French lawmaker is now on trial in Paris, accused of attempting to drug a fellow politician. The case centers on allegations that he laced a drink with a narcotic substance with the intent of committing a sexual assault.

The defendant, a 68-year-old former senator from western France, is charged with administering a substance to alter the victim’s discernment for the purpose of rape or assault, alongside drug-related offenses. He has denied any intent to commit a sexual crime, with his defense previously stating the substance was introduced into the drink accidentally.

The alleged victim, a 50-year-old member of parliament from a centrist party, has stated she accepted a celebratory drink at the defendant’s home after plans to meet elsewhere changed. She reported feeling unwell shortly after, experiencing severe heart palpitations, nausea, and a loss of physical coordination. Sensing danger, she managed to leave the apartment and seek help.

Following the incident, the MP has become a leading voice in legislative efforts to combat drug-facilitated sexual crimes. She co-authored a parliamentary report on the issue and has worked with advocacy groups raising awareness.

In her account, she described the defendant’s behavior as unusual, noting he repeatedly encouraged her to drink. She recalled seeing a suspicious sachet near their glasses before her condition rapidly deteriorated. Fearing a cardiac event, she used a ride-hailing app to escape and was later aided by colleagues and medical personnel.

Prosecutors are expected to present evidence including the defendant’s internet search history from the period preceding the alleged event. If convicted on the most serious charge, he could face up to five years’ imprisonment, with additional penalties for drug possession. The trial continues.
