Niamey, Niger – Explosions and sustained gunfire were reported early Tuesday at the Diori Hamani International Airport in Niger’s capital, with multiple commercial aircraft sustaining significant damage on the ground.
According to eyewitness accounts, the sounds of detonations and automatic weapons fire erupted near the airport complex shortly after midnight. The facility is adjacent to a major military installation, Air Base 101, which has hosted foreign forces in the past.
Initial reports indicate that at least three commercial airliners were struck. A representative for Asky Airlines stated that two of its aircraft parked on the tarmac were hit by gunfire, resulting in multiple penetrations to the fuselage. The airline’s crew, unharmed but currently unable to depart, were off-site at the time of the incident.
Separately, a spokesperson for Air Côte d’Ivoire confirmed that one of its planes was also damaged. An official statement from the airline is forthcoming.
The identity and motives of the attackers remain unknown at this time. There has been no immediate claim of responsibility, and Nigerien authorities have not issued a statement regarding potential casualties or the operational status of the airport.
The incident occurs amid prolonged political and security instability in the West African nation. Since a military takeover in mid-2023, the country has experienced a significant shift in its international alliances and a worsening security environment. The ruling junta severed ties with several Western partners and regional bodies, aligning instead with neighboring military-led states.
Security analysts have noted a sharp increase in militant activity across the Sahel region. Recent data indicates Niger suffered one of the world’s highest surges in terrorism-related fatalities last year, with violence concentrated in border areas. This latest attack on a critical transportation hub in the capital marks a serious escalation, raising concerns about the reach of armed groups and the stability of the country’s core infrastructure.
