Appearing before a congressional oversight committee, President Jerí defended his actions, asserting he is the victim of a conspiracy aimed at destabilizing the nation ahead of scheduled elections. He denied any wrongdoing, stating, “I will not resign, because that would imply I had done something wrong, which is not the case.”
The scandal erupted after videos surfaced showing the president in two separate meetings. One recording depicted him with his hood pulled up at a Chinese restaurant, while another showed him gesticulating during a phone call inside a shuttered shop in Lima’s historic Chinatown district. Public prosecutors have since opened a formal investigation into these gatherings.
The primary individual involved is a long-time Chinese resident of Peru, businessman Yang Zhihua. Also present at one meeting was another Chinese citizen, Ji Wu Xiaodong, who prosecutors allege is linked to an illegal timber trafficking network and had been under house arrest. Official logs indicate both men had visited the presidential palace on multiple occasions in recent months.
President Jerí initially apologized for the first meeting, explaining it was to plan a cultural celebration and acknowledging his attire had raised suspicions. However, the emergence of the second video intensified the political firestorm.
The affair unfolds against a backdrop of intense geopolitical competition in Latin America, where China has become a leading trade and investment partner for many nations, including Peru. Recent major Chinese infrastructure projects in the country have drawn attention from regional observers. Opposition legislators have announced their intention to pursue impeachment proceedings against the interim president.
