A new-look Australian women’s cricket team began its latest chapter with a victory, but not without significant early drama. Overcoming a surprisingly error-strewn performance in the field, the visitors defeated the West Indies by 43 runs in the opening T20 international in St. Vincent.
The win, which sets a positive tone for the team’s new leadership era, was anchored by a commanding batting performance from Beth Mooney. The top-ranked T20 batter played a lone hand at the top of the order, scoring a decisive 79 runs from just 55 deliveries. She found crucial support from veteran all-rounder Ellyse Perry, who contributed 36, as the pair guided Australia to a competitive total of 164 for 6 after a shaky start. West Indies’ bowlers, led by Deandra Dottin who took three wickets, kept the pressure on but could not contain the key partnership.
The pursuit of 165 runs began promisingly for the hosts, aided by an uncharacteristically sloppy Australian fielding effort that included six dropped catches. Leg-spinner Alana King was at the center of the early struggles, spilling three chances. However, she spectacularly redeemed herself with the ball. After a brief rain interruption, King produced a match-turning spell, taking three wickets for just 14 runs, including a double-wicket maiden.
Her fellow leg-spinner, Georgia Wareham, also impressed, claiming two wickets as the spin duo dismantled the West Indies’ middle order. Despite a fighting 45 from opener Qiana Joseph, the hosts’ innings stalled, finishing at 121 for 6.
A notable subplot of the match was the limited role of Australia’s new captain, Sophie Molineux. Returning from a back injury, the all-rounder did not bat or bowl, instead leading solely from the field. Her careful management raises questions about her readiness to fulfill a full playing role as the team builds towards the T20 World Cup later this year.
Reflecting on the performance, the captain praised the team’s resilience. “We found ourselves in a difficult position early on,” she stated, highlighting the pivotal partnership between Mooney and Perry. She also commended King’s ability to rebound, noting her effective new role with the ball during the powerplay overs.
The teams are scheduled to play two more T20 matches in St. Vincent before the series shifts to St. Kitts for a one-day international leg.
