UGANDA’S LONGTIME LEADER DECLARED WINNER AMIDST DISPUTED VOTE

Uganda’s electoral commission has announced that President Yoweri Museveni has secured a seventh term in office, claiming a decisive victory with over 70 percent of the vote. The announcement followed a contentious election period marked by an internet blackout and widespread allegations of misconduct from the political opposition.

The main challenger, musician-turned-politician Bobi Wine, has forcefully rejected the official outcome, labeling the results as fraudulent. In public statements, he cited numerous reported irregularities, including the alleged kidnapping of election officials and systemic manipulation of the voting process. Wine called for peaceful public demonstrations to demand what he termed the legitimate results.

Tensions escalated in the lead-up to the result announcement, with Wine claiming security forces raided his residence, cutting power and disabling surveillance equipment. He stated he left his home to avoid arrest. Authorities denied arresting the opposition leader but confirmed a security cordon around his property, citing a need to maintain public order.

A significant point of contention was the reported failure of biometric voter verification systems in several urban centers, which are considered opposition strongholds. Election officials subsequently authorized the use of manual voter registers, a move endorsed by President Museveni but criticized by Wine as opening the door to ballot stuffing and partisan advantage.

Despite the shutdown of internet services and the fraud allegations, voting day saw limited major unrest. Police reported one fatal clash in central Uganda, stating officers fired in self-defense, a version of events contested by opposition figures.

President Museveni, 81, is one of the world’s longest-serving non-royal leaders, having held power for four decades. His tenure has been characterized by sustained economic growth and stability, but also by the repeated amendment of constitutional term and age limits to enable his continued rule. International democracy watchdogs have consistently questioned the credibility of Uganda’s electoral process.

The country has not experienced a peaceful transfer of power since gaining independence.
